Health department to host grand opening

The Franklin County Health Department Public Health Center, located at 851 East-West Connector, will host a grand opening from 4:30-6 p.m., which celebrates the completion of the renovation of the center. Attendees will be able to tour the newly renovated facility, experiencing the improvements firsthand and connect with public health professionals, local organizations and community members. Awards will begin at 5 p.m.

19th annual Pony Car Roundup

The 19th annual Pony Car Roundup will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Capital City Airport, 90 Airport Road. All cars are welcome. There is a $20 entry fee. Awards will be given to the top 20 cars by category and Best of Show. There will be a goody bag for the first 100 registrants. There will also be a DJ, cake walks and games, a food truck and 50/50 drawing. Free admission for spectators.

Bourbon & Browns

Liberty Hall Historic Site will host Bourbon & Browns from 6-10 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 202 Wilkinson St. As Liberty Hall’s largest annual fundraiser, Bourbon & Browns is the premiere Kentucky Derby event in Kentucky’s capital city. The event will feature a distillers showcase, raffle and auction items, and Kentucky cuisine. All proceeds benefit Liberty Hall Historic Site.

Downtown Frankfort Derby Breakfast Celebration

The Downtown Frankfort Derby Breakfast Celebration will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, on Broadway Street in downtown Frankfort. The activities will capture the essence of the Derby spirit. Wave to the Derby Train on its way to Churchill Downs, listen to live bluegrass music, enjoy delicious breakfast and brunch, signature cocktails, family-friendly fun, competitions, shopping and more.

Story by Story with Adam Booth

Adam Booth will tell “Mr. Patches” during the storytelling series Story by Story at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Paul Sawyier Public Library, 319 Wapping St. “Mr. Patches” is an original story of the 1990s from his Appalachian 20th Century series. With a goal to illuminate the Appalachian experience over the course of a hundred years, Adam’s Appalachian 20th Century is a cycle of original program-length neo-traditional stories about our people and their situations, incorporating two traditional tales, actual historical events and regional culture and folklore. The event is free.

The Frenchman’s Trail: A Walking Tour

The Frenchman’s Trail: A Walking Tour will take place from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in downtown Frankfort. The tour will begin at Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, 100 W. Broadway St. Step into the rich tapestry of history as we honor the remarkable Marquis de Lafayette. Picture the scene of May 1825, when Lafayette, the beloved “Fighting Frenchman” made a memorable stop in Frankfort during his farewell tour of America. Journey along the path he walked through the streets of downtown Frankfort, where the echoes of the past resonate with tales of valor and friendship. Delve into the extraordinary legacy of Lafayette and discover the profound impact he left on both Kentucky and the broader narrative of American history. This is not just a stroll through time — it’s an invitation to witness the enduring spirit of an iconic hero who helped shape a nation. Additional tours will take place from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on May 17 and from 3-4 p.m. on May 17.

LaFayette’s Feast at Liberty Hall

Celebrating 200 years since the Marquis de Lafayette visited Liberty Hall, Lafayette’s Feast is a dinner you won’t want to miss. One hundred guests will be seated at tables of 10, with 10 Kentucky chefs preparing the historical menu in their own modern-day fashion, producing a one-in-a-lifetime community meal in historic downtown Frankfort. Iris DeMent will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Grand Theatre, 308 St. Clair St. DeMent faces the modern world — as it is right now — with its climate catastrophe, pandemic illness and epidemic of violence and social injustice — and not only asks us how we can keep working toward a better world, but implores us to love each other, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces. DeMent is simply one of the finest singer-songwriters in America.
